Vegan Options at Toppers Pizza

Toppers Pizza recently introduced three vegan pizza specials which feature Follow Your Heart cheese and Gardein breaded chicken (per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). I'm impressed by the selection, thanks to Melanie Manuel of the former Celesta restaurant in Milwaukee. Melanie was the menu consultant for Toppers, which seems to have given them an edge over other places who have made weak attempts to provide vegan options.

Korean BBQ Pizza

The Korean BBQ pizza includes Korean bbq sauce, cheese, crispy chicken, onions, and green peppers. This one ended up being way too spicy for me, though I liked the gochujang flavor. I'm also not a fan of Korean sauces mixed with cheese, so if I get brave enough to try this again in the future, I'll get it sans cheese.

Tuscano Pizza

The Tuscano comes with red sauce, cheese, garlic-roasted tomatoes, green olives, and spinach. I asked for green olives on half because I hate olives, but they left them off entirely - a win for me! The pizza had a good amount of sauce, and I'm a huge sucker for red sauce. This was my favorite, but the Buffalo Chicken almost topped it.

Buffalo Chicken Pizza

The Buffalo Chicken pizza includes buffalo sauce, cheese, crispy chicken, green onions, and Follow Your Heart ranch. This one is delicious, but it was too spicy for me. Times like these remind me how much of a Minnesotan I am! Next time I'll plan to have additional ranch on hand to help tone down the heat. The Gardein chicken gets nice and crispy which adds a boost of texture.

Tips for ordering

Toppers has added a page on their website that lists their vegan-friendly options, though keep in mind that cross-contamination can occur. Also, there's always a chance your order will get mixed up and you'll receive animal products. One helpful thing I read in a local vegan Facebook group is that the Gardein chicken is breaded, while the animal meat is not, so that's something to look out for. And you can see in the photos above what the Follow Your Heart cheese should look like; it's very different in appearance from dairy cheese.
